The Matagorda County Marine Advisory Sub Committee is a
non profit organization that is under the Texas A&M University
Marine Extension Agent Program in Matagorda County. The committee
is comprised of 18 individuals with direct involvement in the
commercial shrimp and fish industry in Matagorda County. In
addition to working with the marine extension agent of the county on
the needs and concerns of the industry the committee has an annual fund
raiser for the purpose of providing scholarships to qualifying students
for college tuition. Students are eligible for scholarships in
both their high school senior and college freshman year.
The committee's records indicate that 190 scholarships have been
awarded, to students up through April of 2005 are for approximately
$144,600. This amount does not include approximately $15,500
awarded to 4-H Sea Masters Program, Senior Citizen's Center, and other
local youth programs as scholarships. All of the money awarded by
the committee is raised during their annual fundraiser, the Texas
Fishermen's Festival.
Your public support provides the money awarded to these students every
year, and the committee wishes to thank everyone who assists, supports,
or donates to this fundraiser. Without your support, many of
these students would not be awarded scholarships. We wish to
remind everyone that increased support for the fundraiser would provide
additional scholarships funds for our local students.
